The Celtic pig is a food truck that offers bbq with a Scottish flair that provides its services to the city of Louisville and surrounding areas.
I encountered this food truck for the first time last night while attending the Shakespeare in the park play at central park in old Louisville. I had heard of this truck before (visited my neighborhood one day when I was not home) but never got to see it or try it. The bright green with Scottish kilt bottom draws you in immediately along with the clever name.
Like most food trucks they have a somewhat smaller menu size. I personally ordered a pulled pork sandwich. They load it up pretty Well and the meat was nice and tender. Pretty good pulled pork sandwich.
My wife got the last brisket sandwich of the day. She said it was good. She could tell it was the bottom of the barrel though by the way the meat was sliced. However she said it was tasty. My oldest diagnose got the Pierogis and liked them a bunch. I wanna say it was her first time having Pierogis (I could be wrong) and she was a fan. The younger daughters got Mac and cheese. 2 of the 3 ate them all and my second oldest who is super picky turned her nose up at them.
Pricing was solid and about on par with other bbq trucks I've come across. Overall we had a nice experience here and got tasty food.Helpful 86Thanks 0Love this 77Oh no 0 - Emily C.Louisville, KY45171479Jan 7, 2022
We stopped by the Celtic Pig food truck when it stopped in our neighborhood. I had been wanting to try this one for so long! The whole menu sounded so good, and it was hard to pick what to get.
We ended up ordering the Irish poutine, a pulled pork grilled cheese, and the pierogis. My favorite by far were the pierogis - stuffed with mashed potatoes and cheddar cheese and topped with sautéed mushrooms and onions. They were nice and crispy on the outside and the potato was very flavorful on the inside. I had hoped that the fries in the Irish poutine were crispier, but I still liked the flavor. And of course where can you go wrong with a pulled pork grilled cheese? I will have to hunt down this food truck again!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Oct 16, 2019Updated review
Quick update to my previous review. I got to eat at the brick-and-mortar restaurant yesterday, and I left very much impressed.
More people need to eat here!
I got the fish and chips -- an English/Irish staple -- with some skillet fried corn on the side. I figured that if anyone can make great fish and chips, The Celtic Pig would be it, and I was right. The fish was fried really well; the batter wasn't too thick yet it had some crunch to it. And this came with ample fries. I was not able finish them all.
And the skillet fried corn was a fun surprise. This had the sweetness of the corn plus the awesomeness of the bacon.
Our server was quick and attentive, and my friend and I were surprised to see the restaurant largely empty during lunchtime. But that way we were also able to check out the interior. Along with several tables, there is a great seating area with a couch, arm chair and fireplace -- would be especially cozy in the wintertime.
And then downstairs, there is a large bar area, with what looked like several great beers on tap.
As the weather gets colder, the comfort of Irish and English food will be calling. The Celtic Pig can help with that.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 9Oh no 0Oct 3, 2019Previous reviewI've been a fan of the Celtic Pig ever since their food truck days.
I was excited to see them open a brick-and-mortar restaurant, and I finally got to eat from it, albeit it was via delivery via Yelp.
I ordered the Pork Grilled Cheese sandwich, which was a mix of pulled pork and grilled cheese on Texas toast. I really enjoyed this sandwich. The pork had a great flavor, and I liked the mix of cheese and toast.
And it remained delicious the following day when I microwaved the second half for lunch.
I got my sandwich with creamy mac and cheese.
I've had the food truck, now delivery -- excited to eat in the restaurant next! - Feb 9, 2020
This is such a fun food truck. I was so excited for them when they were able to open their own brick and mortar off Main St. they have a great spot and Location. The upstairs is good for lunch and a quick bite. The downstairs is a cozy sit down space with a special Irish style bar. We had a book club event here and found ourselves downstairs. They had trivia going in the main room so we ended up in the secret room called a shebeen.
A shebeen is where folks would go to have alcohol, especially if they were someone who did not want to be seen in public drinking alcohol. This would be a place women could drink. For us, the shebeen became a perfect spot to have a book club discussion. The happy hour specials were fantastic. The food was yummy and delicious. As a vegetarian I appreciated the variety of options. There was a chana masala dish, a pierogi dish, and a variety of sides. I enjoyed the pierogis and the Mac and cheese that night. It was an excellent meal. I can't wait to go back and try some other goodies.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Dec 9, 2019
The Celtic Pig? Wandering down the street from Angel's Envy and there sitting innocuously off to one side is none other than this amazing restaurant!
First let me say... the place itself is a very homey multi-level restaurant. With bars on at least two levels! When we arrived they were setting up for trivia and invited us to choose the trivia room or the downstairs bar that promised to be quieter. So we opted for the non-trivia area.
I ordered an Old Fashioned! I know that this shocks those that have read others of my reviews. But, there is a full bar here so many options for you to choose from. I also jumped right into the great food with an appetizer of the Scotch Egg. And then off to an entree of Fish & Chips!
This place was both fun and friendly and I would eat here every day of the week if I could!
Thanx for reading and keep on eating!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aug 20, 2019
Food trucks...
Usually it is either a "heck yeah" or "not a fan". Honestly I have been to both ends of that and am glad to say The Celtic Pig was on the positive end of the spectrum.
What possesses these folks to drive to a spot and cook/serve walker bys even on heat stroke days like today?
Whatever their motivation, I applaud them because my Fish & Chips were delicious and really hit the spot. I didn't see them hand batter the fish but it seemed likely that it was so. The sign indicated CRISP fries and that hit the mark as well.
Condiments on the table which included, to my delight, malt vinegar.
The fish was crunchy outside and tender/flaky inside
Easy to add to my food truck happiness!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Randy C.Frankfort, KY2289244May 7, 2021
This is my second time having delicious delicacies from this amazing food truck, they are a colorful group that definitely knows their way around a barbecue pit! When I saw them parked across the street from my house today, I just had to go back again... The last time I had their fare was last year at a tree giveaway and both times I was not disappointed. Amazingly enough, I had the brisket grilled cheese both times... Come on, who wouldn't want brisket on a grilled cheese... This is the second time they knocked it out of the park. The pulled pork was not mine, but I'm sure it was amazing and I did manage to steal a little of the macaroni and cheese which was ridiculous. I can't wait until they come back again, and I'm still full from eating!!! BIG FAN...

Stumbled across this place which doing the Bourbon Trail. This by far was the best place we found to eat at! Food was amazing and had great portions. Staff helped with suggestions for both food and drinks and I was not disappointed by either!!

Visit for lunch today. We were somewhat disappointed, but there were some highlights.
First of all, our last visit, the service was terrible. This visit the service was very good.
My wife ordered the Halfsie ($8) which is a half sandwich paired with a cup of soup/chili.
Her half sandwich was the Chicken Salad with a cup of Irish Chili. She thought the Chicken Salad was just ok. She liked the taste of the chili, but it was served barely warm and was heavy on the salt.
I ordered the Brisket Sandwich ($9.50) which came with fries. I also ordered a cup of Irish Chili ($4). Both my wife and I agreed the chili was very salty. However my chili was served hotter than hers and was pretty tasty.
My brisket sandwich was topped with cheese and mushrooms on a hoagie bun. The brisket itself was sliced extremely thin which reminded me of the old Steak Em's. Since the brisket was so thin, when they grilled it, the edges became dry and brittle. I was served au jus which I used as a dip. That helped.
My side of fries were a huge portion of steak fries. They were served hot and crispy. Excellent!
The lunch menu is pretty limited compared to the on line menu.
Draft beer available sold in pints. I had a Smithwicks ($6) which was very good.
Unfortunately, nothing outstanding that would bring us back.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Apr 25, 2019Previous reviewThree of us for lunch. Celtic Pig has just recently opened and it seems they're still ironing out a few rough spots.
The food in general ranged from good to very good. However, service was somewhat lacking. I want to say, our server was courteous and respectful, but he lacked experience and struggled to handle our orders.
We started with the Kraut Ball Appetizer. The Kraut Balls (4) were outstanding and served with stone ground mustard priced at $7.
One in our party ordered the Fish and Chips ($14). There was one large piece of Cod and a mountain of French fries. The fish was tender and white meat with a mild flavor and nice batter. Another ordered the Shepard's Pie ($10) which is served with two sides. The Shepard's Pie was served in a very hot skillet and the food remained hot the entire meal. The sides ordered were Kale and Collards and Macaroni and Cheese. All portions were generous. The Shepard's Pie was very good and was covered with a sweet gravy that had an almost caramelized taste to it. The greens were good as was the Mac and Cheese.
I ordered the Scotch Egg ($12) which is served as an entree. My two sides were the previously mentioned Kale and Collards plus the Rumble-de-Thump, which is mashed potatoes with several vegetables mixed in. The mixture seemed like the filling to the Shepard's Pie minus the meat. Out of all the Scotch Eggs I've had in the Louisville area, this is the first that was served as a SOFT boiled egg inside. The Scotch Egg was huge. The egg was wrapped in ground pork and chorizo. The chorizo seemed to over power the entire entree. However I still enjoyed the meal.
We ordered a piece of Coconut Pie ($4) for dessert. We also ordered a Bread Pudding to go. Both desserts were delivered to the table wrapped to go. So we broke out what was supposed to be Coconut Pie, and what we had was Peanut Butter Pie. The server offered to take back the pie and get the correct piece we ordered. We had such an ordeal getting our meals we declined and just ate the Peanut Butter Pie.
Through out the entire meal we had to ask for things that should have normally been provided. We had to ask for plates to share the appetizer. We had to ask more than once for ketchup and tarter sauce.
We will return to try some of the sandwiches and BBQ.
