SOS, a Louisville-based global health non-profit organization, positively impacts the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals each year. Established as a program under the Greater Louisville Medical Society in 1993, SOS became a formal 501 (c) 3 in 2010.
With over 100 medical and hospital partners, SOS collects 400,000-500,000 pounds of surplus medical supplies annually that otherwise would have been thrown away. Utilizing expertise of trained staff, the items are categorized, packaged and redirected to meet the needs of healthcare and educational partners. SOS is the ONLY organization within our region that has the capacity to do this work and one of only seven that have been accredited nationally.
INNOVATION AND GROWTH TRAJECTORY: Originally focused solely on directing medical supplies to developing countries outside the U.S., in 2017 SOS began donating critically needed medical supplies locally. In addition to the healthcare sector, SOS leveraged its expertise in surplus supply networks and innovation to drive more local impact in the education and social services sector. By donating these essential supplies that otherwise would have to be purchased, SOS is reducing costs for our community’s nonprofits and educational organizations which allows them to direct saved monies to enhance programs and reduce costs for participants.
